Mom just said this about me scheduling my classes for next year. I haven’t had a good Mom rant in a while, so here goes nothing.

First of all, since when does Momma know best?

She didn’t understand that I was depressed until she saw my razors and cuts that bled for hours and were about 4 centimeters deep.

If she knows best, then why the fuck do I STILL want to cut up?

Why can I get away with being Anorexic?

Why have I attempted Suicide (Major attempts) Twice in a years time?

She wants me to take some class that she thinks will be easy and boost my GPA. Since when should my GPA be more important than my mental health?

Oh yeah, that’s right.

As soon as she thinks I won’t be able to get into fucking Harvard.

Youth Equality Services (YES)

YES is an inclusive youth program serving individuals ages 14 through 17 years old (18 years old allowed if enrolled in High School or the equivalent) regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

The mission is to provide youth an inclusive, safe space for open dialogue, support and authentic self-expression.

We envision empowered youth who have the freedom to express themselves openly and honestly.

The YES program will meet on the second and fourth Thursday of every month; our next meeting will be June 14th. We have a Car Wash on June 16th in Fayetteville if you’d like to participate with that.

Pride Parade

This year’s parade will be on June 30, 2012. Starting from the same location in the same parking lot on the corner of Meadow Street and Church Avenue, Fayetteville, AR. Line up will start at 8 AM, with the parade starting at 10 AM.

We also have our theme, “Color Outside the Lines.” Celebrating the community in a red state. The parade will be dedicated Linda Wilson,Diversity Pride Events, and Art Beeghly(NWA Center for Equality), both who left this world in 2011, but helped a community flourish in NW Arkansas.

A high school yearbook staff and adviser are coming under fire for publishing a feature about a gay student in the yearbook.

The yearbook at Lenoir City High School in Tennessee ran a short piece about student Zac Mitchell’s experiences as an openly gay teen in a conservative area, under the headline “It’s OK to be gay.” After the yearbooks came out, a school board member and blogger called for a criminal investigation of the yearbook adviser for “inflicting their personal beliefs and sexual orientation decisions on impressionable students.”

According to the Associated Press, petitions are circulating for students to rip the page out of their yearbooks during graduation and even for Mitchell to be banned from going to graduation.

This actually makes me sick. The fact that it would cross someone’s mind to ban a student from walking at their high school graduation for being openly gay is completely inexcusable and indefensible. Some individuals in this area are clearly living in a different time.

This is seriously demented? Are these people complete morons?

Wait, not sure what the Day of Silence is? Well, let me explain. The Day of Silence is a day where middle school through college age people around the world take a pledge to remain silent the entire day in an attempt to bring attention to the silencing effect bullying has on the LGBT community.

I, personally, have taken the pledge. I encourage all of you to do so. And when you do, register saying you have via the link below so it can be shown that people around the world support this and that bullying and harassment against the LGBT community is a big deal.

At the University of Pittsburgh, a new policy states that all students and staff must use the school bathroom matching the gender on their birth certificate, a truly low blow to the school’s transgender community.

City officials in Pittsburgh have articulated their disdain for the new policy, calling it “very concerning.” In Pennsylvania, trans* people cannot have their birth certificate changed unless and until they have gender reassignment surgery, which not every trans* person can or wants to do, and even then not everyone can change their birth certificate.

Perhaps most telling is this comment on the Pitt News story from commenter Nate:

I am a transman that passes as Male 100% of the time. HRT has adorned me with a full beard. If I walk into the female restroom I fully expect women to have an adverse reaction. I do not plan on showing them my genitals or carry around my birth certificate to resolve such a situation. I appear male (an in fact I am) and PITT’s policy puts the entire student population at risk for some very uncomfortable interactions. This arcane rule must be changed.

This is truly messed up. I really hope students take offense to this and demand change.

Remember Stacey Campfield, the Tennessee state senator who claims it’s impossible to get HIV/AIDS from heterosexual sex? A restaurant in his home state remembers too.

Campfield was recently asked to leave the Knoxville restaurant Bistro at the Bijou in reference to a series of antigay comments he made in an interview this month. The restaurant’s Facebook page has gotten tons of love as a result.
